Play as Development [Meeting]

Rhetorics of Child Play [Textbook]

Read S-S Ch. 3

Is your play educational? [Assignment]

Play has often been described by researchers as positive, adaptive, and educational, while other researchers have been skeptical. In class on 8/31, you brought your own example of a playful technology to class and talked about it. For your first blog post, (1) very briefly explain your play with this object (or technology) using a developmental argument from chapter 3 of Sutton-Smith. In other words: How could the play you described count as progress and/or learning? Then, (2) state at least one problem with your own explanation. (3) Be sure to cite some material (a concept, phrase, or passage) from chapter 3 to explain what you mean by a developmental argument.

To receive credit, your blog post must be on time, at least 250 words, and address each part of the question. Please write, spell-check, and save your blog posts in a word processor first, then post them to your blog. When you make a direct quotation or paraphrase, include a citation to the page and author where you found the material. DUE: 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 7 (one hour before class begins).

NOTE: Blog posts are always assigned by midnight Wednesdays and due one hour before class on Mondays. This week you have more time because of Labor Day.
